  • American Museum – Congo Expedition 1909-1915
      The American Museum of Natural History sponsored an expedition to the Belgian Congo with Herbert Lang leading the expedition and James P. Chapin as his assistant. Between 1909-1915, Lang and Chapin collected nearly 23000 vertebrate specimens and over 100,000 invertebrates. They also collected thousands of anthropological objects and took thousands of photographs in the field.

  • Rainforest of the Democratic Repulic of Congo
      Rainforests in the central and northern regions of the Congo Democratic Republic, (formerly Zaire), occupy more than half of the countrys total area of nearly one million square miles. These rainforests represent 82 percent of the countrys original forest cover. About 47 percent of Africas dense tropical forests and 6 percent of the planets forests are in the Congo Democratic Republic (CDR). As a result of the long distances between CDRs forests and commercial harbors, as well as a political crisis and armed conflicts in the region during the 1990s, most of the countrys forests remain relatively untouched.
